For Sale...

Man accused of selling daughter for cash, beer

GREENFIELD, Calif.—Police have arrested a Greenfield man for allegedly arranging to sell his 14-year-old daughter into marriage in exchange for $16,000, 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat.

Police said they only learned of the deal after the 36-year-old man went to them to get his daughter back because payment wasn't made as promised. The man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of human trafficking.

Officers also arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of statutory rape. Investigators believe the girl went willingly with the man, but she's under California's legal age of consent and can't legally marry.

Police say arranged marriages involving underage girls have become a problem in this small Central Coast farming community.

A 14 year old is only worth $16,000 plus 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat?? First, I am pretty sure that you have spent more than $16,000 overall for a person to live by the time they turn 14. I am going to have to check with my financial analyst, Mike "Flounder" Foley about this one. Secondly, A HUNDRED CASES OF BEER? Why not just ask for more money to buy the beer? What flavor or beer? Third, how many is "several" cases of meat - 3, 5, 8, 50? What kind of meats - beef, lamb, pork? Fourthly, WHO SELLS THEIR DAUGHTER? Lastly, where/how does an 18 year old get $16,000? I mean that is kind of a lot of cash for someone who is barley out of high school.

I certainly do not want to scare any of your readers that are considering starting a family. As you know, I've done extensive reasearch in this field. The bottom line number for raising a child from 0 to 14. = $592,438.
I bet there will be a BIG line in front of CVS this week.
Want some more scary news? Add the expenses from 14 - 18 and 18-22 and you are looking at another $35,000 (14-18) and $95,000 more (18-22) That's with tuition at a state school. How's $722,438 sound?
If you want I can send you the breakdow with full details of how I arrived at these numbers via e-mail. Feel free to cut and paste it on a future post.

in light of these numbers 16,000 was a great move look at the future savings! the beer was a bonus obvious part of a resale to minors to recoup money lost and the meat?? i've learned anyone who is willing to throw in cases of meat u take it sight unseen as a sign of good faith.
