Squares

From Country of Cretins:

I'm going to let you know how shitty your squares pool number is. If you are sitting on 5-5*, 2-2, or 8-8 you may as well rip up that sheet right now. Your odds of winning are about 1000-1. Thanks for donating, chump.

I went through the past 44 Superbowls and checked the frequency of certain numbers. We all know 7, 4 and 0 are good numbers.....but how good? There have been 88 final scores (44 games with each team having a score) and here is how they panned out. The first number is the final score number, the second number is how many times it has appeared in a final score and the last number is the percentage term of how many times it appeared:

7 - 19 (21.6%)
0 - 12 (13.6%)
4 - 11 (12.5%)
6 - 10 (11.3%)
1 - 10 (11.3%)
9 - 8 (9.1%)
3 - 7 (7.9%)
2 - 4 (4.5%)
5 - 4 (4.5%)
8 - 3 (3.4%)

I was surprised that 8 was the shittiest number of all. We all know that 2 and 5 suck balls but I thought 8 would appear more. I'm also surprised that 6 showed up so often.

If you are lucky enough to be holding a 7 in your pool, it has appeared the most often paired with 4 (five times) then with zero (3 times). The pair of 7-7 have won twice and 7-3 has also won twice.

If you ARE sitting on a 5 as one of your numbers, you better hope it's paired with a 1 or a 0. Of the four times "5" has appeared, it has been paired with the number 1 twice and with 0 twice.

If you're sitting on a "2" - anything goes: it has been paired once each with 4,0,7 and 9

The number "5" appeared in the very first Superbowl in 1967. It then appeared 12 years later in 1979....then 11 years after that in 1990 and then took 7 years to hit again in 1997. The good news? Judging by those periods between "5" showing up, we are overdue at 14 years. Perhaps this will be the year.
